The manufacturing of PVC is done through polymerization; most PVC manufacturers use vinyl chloride monomer or VCM. VCM is heated under intense pressure and is allowed to cool down to retain its shape. Interestingly, such a useful material was discovered by mistake, not once but twice in history. Once in 1835 by Henri Victor and the second time in 1872 by Eugen Baumann. However, none of them was able to develop it fully. It was only in 1926 that Waldo Semon and the B.F. Goodrich Company had the idea to plasticize the polyvinyl chloride by testing out different additives. This resulted in making the material much friendlier to both work with and use as a final product.
