Online rummy is fast-growing as the popular social card game across the world after poker. Although rummy has been around for decades now, its online format has brought in a new dimension of challenge and interest to the game altogether. With several variants and their slight variations in the rummy rules, specific variants are popular in certain regions. For e.g. Gin rummy is very popular in Europe while Indian rummy is synonymous with rummy in the Indian context.
Let’s take a whirlwind tour of some of the famous types/ variants of online rummy that you may enjoy playing while you master the game.
Gin Rummy
Generally played with two players, online rummy rules vary slightly. At the start, each player is dealt 10 cards. A standard deck of 52 cards is used. The cards are ranked from highest to lowest as King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. The objective is to meld sets and runs. A set is 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits; runs are 3 or more consecutive of the same suit. Each player is dealt with 10 cards with the next card being placed face up forming the discard pile and the remaining cards face down as the stock pile. Players have to reduce the deadwood cards (cards not in any meld).

Indian Rummy
As a very popular variant of rummy, it has made a place for itself in the hearts of millions of Indians. Also known as 13 card rummy, it is a perfect blend of fun, challenge, and entertainment for all. The online format of the game has amplified the excitement incredibly. As per Indian rummy rules, it is played between 2 to 6 players. A standard deck of 52 cards along with the printed joker is used. The objective of the game is to meld sets and sequences before your opponents by picking and discarding the cards. Each player is dealt with 13 cards initially and a card is randomly picked as the wild card joker. According to Indian rummy rules, in order to win each player has to meld at least 2 sequences with 1 sequence without using the jokers (pure sequence).
The other variants of Indian rummy are Points rummy, Pool rummy and Deals rummy.
Rummy 500
Also known by other names such as Michigan rummy, Pinochle rummy or 500 rummy, it is played between 2 to 8 players. The standard deck of 52 cards is used and played with jokers too. When there are 3 or more players each player is dealt 7 cards at the start and the remaining cards are placed as stock pile. The unique feature about rummy 500 is each player’s score is calculated based on the value of the sets he/ she meld. Played over several rounds, as the name suggests, the players who scores a cumulative score of 500 first is the winner of the game.
