1. Jallikattu – The taming of bulls: You must have heard of the bull run of Pamplona, Spain. The Jallikattu, also known as Manjavirattu, is the Indian version celebrated in Tamil Nadu. The village of Alanganallur in Madurai district is famous for this event when men try to tame and take control of bulls reared specifically for this sport. Jallikattu is an art form and a tradition they do not want to lose to the local people.
2. Kulasai Dasara: This festival belongs to Mysore. The USP of this festival is that the slaying of the demon Mahishasura is one of its highlights, as well as the thousands of devotees who arrive at the temple, dressed as Kali and other forms of Durga and other gods. 3. Kunde Festival: The tribal people of the Coorg district celebrate this festival in May. The tribal communities in Thithimathi, Devarapura, and the surrounding areas gather together and hurl abuse at the gods. The ancient story goes that Lord Aiyappa took the tribes hunting in the forest but abandoned them when he saw the Goddess Bhadrakali and fell in love with her. So, the Kunde Habba is the tribals getting their revenge and trying to win back the gods’ attention. Special songs are also part of the ceremonies. Sounds quite crazy and weird?
4. Shigmotsav: How many people know that Goa celebrates an amazing festival named Shigmotsav? It includes floats, troupes of swirling dancers, and much color and pomp. 5. Koovagam – A gathering of the transgender community: It is a 15-day-long festival held in April-May in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district. The transgender community gathers before Koothandavar Temple and marries the God Frett Board.
